The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards are internationally recognised and have fast become the most sought after accolade by organisations from every sector.
This key fixture in the health and safety calendar 2015 offers organisations a prime opportunity to prove their ongoing commitment to raising health and safety standards and to be a part of the longest running and most highly respected occupational safety awards programme.
More than 14,000 people die as a result of accidents across the UK each year. There are millions of other injuries. Accidents cause loss and suffering to the victims and their loved ones, employers and UK society as a whole.
We promote safety and the prevention of accidents at work, at leisure, on the road, in the home and through safety education.
Join us as we look at some of the very latest thinking, initiatives, and emerging best practice, whilst considering - what makes Scotland such a health and safety leader within the UK?
Now in its 59th year the RoSPA Safety Awards recognise health and safety success and offer organisations a prime opportunity to prove their ongoing commitment to raising health and safety standards.
In recent years the economic outlook has looked bleak. Yet the health and safety community in Scotland has developed somewhat of a reputation for innovative thinking and strong partnership working – enabling the pioneering of many bold new management ideas.

HCS Control Systems has recently delivered two innovative dual-drum umbilical reeler systems for an Australian project. The project requirements were unusual as two umbilicals were required to be deployed at the same time, posing particular deployment challenges to Operations.
HCS’ solution was to design both drums being operated from a single motor and gearbox set, with the flexibility to run each side simultaneously or independently of each other. The arrangement gives a reduced footprint over two reeler systems, improved Operator safety during deployment and retrieval operations, and can be operated by one technician instead of at least two. As always, the designs are fully ATex and DNV certified, and in this instance additionally certified to local Australian regulations.
HCS’ Operations Director Kenny Balfour said “The dual-drum design is an example of HCS’ in-house engineering and manufacturing abilities in providing practical and effective operational solutions. The units will provide our client with tangible operational benefits and improved operator safety.”
HCS Control Systems has announced a string of new contracts that will deliver around £4m in revenue for the business over the next few months.
The new contracts which are from a variety of existing and new clients in the North Sea and overseas build on our existing production schedule at our design and manufacturing facility in Glenrothes.
The contracts include the design, manufacture, FAT and supply of various products and subsea equipment including;
• two pneumatically driven umbilical reeler systems
• deployment frames
• subsea distribution units
• reelers system, baskets and sheaves
Colin Milne, Sales Director at HCS said: “In the current market, this string of contract wins confirms that our business model and product offering are streamlined and comprehensive, and together provide our clients with an incentive driven package."
HCS Control Systems are pleased to announce that Dean Hilton has joined HCS as Services Manager. Dean is a specialist orbital welding engineer and experienced project manager with over 25 years experience. Dean was previously with Cameron / OneSubsea in a variety of roles around the globe, prior to this was HCS’ manufacturing manager until 2004.
Dean will manage HCS’ new fleet of global rental assets, including reeler systems and our unique test and flushing workshops, as well as manpower and specialist orbital welding services.
HCS Control Systems recently delivered the first of its new design standard umbilical reeler systems. These units are the result of extensive engineering 3D design and with close design input from our manufacturing and operations departments.
This team effort has meant the new design is not only more cost effective to clients, but also delivery times from approval of drawings of typically only 12 weeks, versus 20 or more elsewhere in the industry.
In executing the new design, nothing has been compromised in the functional reeler design, they are ready for full DNV, ATex and IEec dual certification for the most stringent zone-rated applications in any global subsea project, in addition to any additional project-specific requirements. The units can be powered with any of HCS proven drive systems, including pneumatic, hydraulic and direct electric drive, and suitable for both shallow and deep-water applications.
Following a record business year in 2014, HCS Control Systems has invested in two new IWOCS rental reeler and umbilical systems. The 1500ft 20-way hydraulic systems are already contracted for work in the North Sea, beyond this HCS expect their dual Atex / IEec and DNV 2.7.1 certifications will mean the units will have ready application to any global oil and gas installation, as they are the only such certified rental units available to clients today.
Further units are planned, please contact HCS’ Services Manager Dean Hilton to discuss your project requirements today.
